"THERE'S a certain magic and romance surrounding the
classic car scene, which a showroom-fresh Ford Mondeo or Vauxhall Vectra
simply cannot compete with. And, in the 1980s, the classic car market
boomed as successful city slickers bought prestige metal both as an investment
and as a way to stand out from the crowd.
It was a time when the prices of Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Aston Martins
and the rarer Porsches and Mercedes Benz went through the roof. This had
the effect of raising prices of humbler classics to an unrealistic level
and many, many people had their fingers burned.
Today though, prices of classic cars have fallen to arguably their most
affordable ever level, resulting in there being many bargains around for
those wishing either 'something for the weekend' or a regular everyday
run-around. It also means that cars are within the grasp of genuine enthusiasts
rather than the wealthy get-rich-even-quicker mob.
Of course, the risks involved in buying a classic vehicle are substantially
greater than those associated with a three-year-old family hatchback and
this means it's vitally
important that you buy only from a reputable source.
Drive out of the city [Edinburgh], travel a few miles down the A1, and
you'll soon find one of the best-prepared and most varied selection of
classic cars in the country.
From a 1952 Bristol 401 through to a 1992 Maserati Ghibli, classic and
thoroughbred car sales specialist e-motive cars prides itself in
having something to suit all tastes.
Situated at Fenton Barns Retail Village, near North Berwick, e-motive
cars is owned and managed by ex-Jaguar design engineer Rob Pickles.
Rob acquired his premises in September last year and, since then, has
been travelling the length and breadth of the UK in search of suitable
vehicles for his collection. Rob said: "As we aim to supply the best
cars in the best condition at a fair price, it can take a while to locate
suitable cars. Some are sourced locally but others often come from England."
Before any car is offered for sale, Rob has a full rolling road diagnosis
and Car Scan Report carried out. This is always made available to customers
so they can see the exact condition of what they may be buying.
Rob added: "In addition to the comprehensive Car Scan report I normally
drive the cars for a good 1,000 to 2,000 miles myself. This allows time
to identify anything which needs to be rectified before the vehicle goes
on sale."
In addition to the older cars, such as an immaculate 1953 Triumph TR3
and genuine low mileage 1969 E-Type Jaguar, e-motive cars also
deals in more modern classics. The 1986 BMW 635CSi, 1989 Lancia HF Integrale
and 1992 Maserati Ghibli are among the finest for their age and mileage.
But, during my visit, one car stood out as offering a lot of metal for
the money. Bought by its previous owner before values fell, the 1970 Aston
Martin DBS has a fully documented service and restoration history, with
receipts for £46,000, yet the Aston can be bought now from e-motive
cars at £14,500 - that's £95 less than a new Mondeo LX.
